onMentorship and Mental Health
In our 2023 Early Career Survey, 73% of legal professionals joining the field highlighted mentorship as crucial when looking for employment. And why wouldn't it be? Mentorship provides invaluable guidance and support, particularly during challenging times. Often, mentors are able to teach and guide mentees about what's not in the textbooks — including essential insights into mental health. Drawing from their own experiences, mentors provide advice on work-life balance, stress management techniques, and the significance of self-care. They can also provide a safe space for mentees to discuss concerns, seek advice and develop effective coping strategies.
“Mentorship is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and
a push in the right direction.” — John C. Crosby
The Role of Organisational Support
To maximise the impact of mentorship on mental health, organisations must prioritise and invest in structured mentorship programs. These programs should emphasise training for mentors, establish clear objectives for mentorship relationships, and provide resources for mental health education and support.
Mentorship fosters a more supportive and inclusive workplace culture within law firms and legal departments. By promoting open communication and empathy, mentorship initiatives reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues. Mentors serve as role models, demonstrating the importance of prioritising mental well-being and encouraging mentees to seek help when needed.
Although mentors can significantly help mentees by giving advice and sharing their experiences, it is also important to note that mentors are no replacement for therapists. Mentors are seen as a trusted advisor by sharing knowledge that may not be in textbooks. Therapists are trained professionals that guide you to see your feelings, thoughts, choices and actions that affect each other. If you are feeling helpless, anxious or are going through burnout, please consult a therapist.

Mentorship plays a pivotal role in promoting mental health and well-being within the legal profession. As the legal field continues to evolve, investing in mentorship programs remains essential for cultivating a healthier, more resilient workforce.
